The Hatters Community Trust Staff will 'walk on water' this week to raise funds for local Keech Hospice, who provide care for local kids with a life limiting conditions.

Well, not quite walk on water, but all of the Trust's staff have committed to covering the same distance on foot as the English Channel is wide in 5 days. That's around 45 km or 27 miles OR 50,000 steps to cover the distance between Dover and Calais.

The Hospice's children’s service supports families from across Beds, Herts and Milton Keynes who have a child or young person diagnosed with a life-limiting condition. Care is not just provided at the hospice itself but in the hospital, school, care or family home – wherever support is needed the most and the Hospice children’s service consists of an in-patient unit, community nursing team, day support and supportive care team, all of whom support both child and family at times of crisis and when a child need's specialist care from day to day.

Hatters Head of Trust Kevin Thoburn commented: "We normally see a lot of active kids in our every day working life and focusing on kids not so fortunate is a timely way to remind all of our staff and sports coaches that there are worse things in life than 'lockdown'.

"Our lives will return to normal eventually but that's not the case for lots of these kids. The Community Trust staff were up for another challenge following our recent successful fundraiser for the Luton Foodbank, and with all of the 100 hospice charity shops currently shut, we thought we'd try another fundraiser for a service that's been badly hit by the pandemic.

"We've raised the bar with this challenge and staff will definitely be taking advantage of 'unlimited activity allowance' next week!

"We're setting off from Dover this Sunday 31st May, posting each day's total to make sure we all make it to Calais 5 days later on Thursday 4th June. It's around 10,000 steps a day or 8 kms, and our target is to raise £1,000 by next Friday."

You can donate here and support the Trust's staff make it to France - if they all make it across and reach their fundraising target they can get the ferry back!
