Prior to Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest facing-off for a place in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, Luton (Sacred Heart) will play Sheffield United on the pitch.

During one final training session at Kenilworth Road before the big match, PE coordinator Charles Betts said: “Players go through their whole professional careers as adults and never get to play at Wembley so to be doing that at the age of 10 and 11-years-old is so special.

“I think they are so privileged to do that but there is so much more they are doing which is going into it. They are getting to meet a few pros, and then they get a stadium tour of Wembley. It is not just the game and they have worked incredibly hard to get where they are in this competition.

Explaining the route to the final, Betts added: “We had a local competition, then a county one and then we got to the regional one which is all of the Championship teams from the south of England, and we got to play Millwall in the final. We were actually coasting, 3-1 up, but then finals especially nowadays so many of them go to penalties.

“We had a penalty shoot-out in the semi-final against Derby as well so we thought we were heading that way again but we won in the last two minutes. It was an incredible experience and I think if you are going to win a game in a certain, a last-minute winner is probably the best way to do it.

One final message to the Year 6 boys playing at Wembley?

“Best of luck! We want them to enjoy it, they have put a lot of work in. We’d say to anyone, adults or kids, just leave it all on the pitch and don’t come back with any regrets. If they win that would be amazing and we’d love that obviously but it’s an incredible experience so the winning is a bonus.

“We are really incredibly proud of them as a school and they have done us proud with both their football ability and their behaviour and I’m sure that will continue at the weekend.”
