Alex Lawless is optimistic for the season as our Under-21s made the perfect start to 2024/25 with a win against Northampton Town at Moulton College on Tuesday afternoon.

“I think we deserved to win the game overall,” explained Lawless. “I think that in all matches that you dominate play in, especially as much as we did in this one, we’d like to hurt them a little bit more.

“In light of recent results and us being where we want to be, it was definitely a step in the right direction.”

The coach was full of praise for wing-back Benagr, who was the catalyst for the young Hatters coming away with the victory.

“It was a great hat-trick from him, Benny playing wing-back is the front foot that we want, where we were attacking down the wing and in the middle.

“He worked really hard and was ruthless with his finishing today which essentially won us the game.”

A great win for our Under-21s to begin the season, but Lawless feels the team can go further this season and build on the performance.

“Under-21s is an age group where there is quite a bit of movement, switching younger players, maybe older players, and then your early pros.

“It would be difficult to judge too much when we’ve got some different types of games against some top opposition in terms of higher divisions and then some down.

“I think we aim to be as competitive as possible; we aim to win these games and then we have the Premier League Cup which we want to do as well as we possibly can in.

“But looking at this game, it was a good win, and we want to carry it on.”
