HARRY CORNICK ON HAVING TO BE RUTHLESS IN FRONT OF GOAL

Town forward Harry Cornick has admitted he has to be ‘ruthless’ with every chance he gets, following his fifth goal of the season against Birmingham.

Minutes after coming on, Cornick ran onto a pass Izzy Brown played through, and hammered the ball in off the crossbar.

The goal, with many similarities to his strike against Bristol City, brought the game back level, before the Blues found a late winner.

Nevertheless on a personal note, the 24-year-old is happy with the improvement he has made in-front of goal this season, saying: “I’ve been doing a lot of work with Ini (Inigo Idiakez) on my finishing and that’s pretty much the finish we do every week now, every day even to try and put it there.

“To be fair I probably should have scored against Fulham when I had a good chance then. So I need to keep working at it and keep improving because in these sorts of matches, you’re not going to get that many opportunities and you have got to take them when you get it because some games you might get no chances. You just have to be ruthless when you get the chance."

Cornick has had to be very patient for his break in the team after he was regularly used as an impact substitute last season, starting 14 out of the 32 games he played in League One.

Before the trip to St Andrew’s, the forward had started eleven Championship games in a row, which he admits has been a real confidence-booster for him.

“He (Graeme Jones) spoke to me before the game and told me the reasons why and it’s completely understandable why I didn’t start today. I’ve got to know my role in the team, last year I was mainly on the bench, I’m used to that role and I know what I can do off the bench, I think I’m an impact when I come on and today I’ve shown that.

“If the manager thinks I can do it, I’ve just got to trust what he says and go with what he thinks.

“Personally it’s my best run in the team since I signed here really, to get eleven starts in a row has been good for me to build my confidence and I think I’m getting towards where I think I can be, playing my best football and today was just a little rest and I came on and made an impact.”

With the strike on Saturday being his fifth of the campaign, the former Bournemouth man is now one goal away from the tally he accumulated last season in 32 outings.

He was keen to add how much Hatters boss Graeme Jones has influenced his game as well, adding: “The gaffer spoke to me about believing I can score and believing in what I can do and I think I’m putting that into place.

“Mentally he has helped me a lot, believing when I go through on goal I’m going to score, not hoping I’m going to score, making sure every shot I take I’m thinking this is going in the back of the net.

“It is something I’m working on and I can only improve if I keep working with the coaches to help my finishing.”
