Harry Cornick | "It was a gift for me!"

Harry Cornick was the man of the moment after his goal helped Luton secure sixth position in the Sky Bet Championship with a win over Reading yesterday.

The attacker lurked behind the Royals’ Orjan Nyland and as he rolled the ball out, Cornick pounced and scored what proved to be the winning goal at Kenilworth Road.

Speaking about his cheeky tactic post-match, the 27-year-old said: “I thought I’d stay behind him and see what happens. I’ve seen a few people do that in previous games and I thought I’d give it a go. To be fair their fans were screaming ‘man on, man on’ behind you, and I thought ‘he’s got to hear’ but he rolled it out and it was a gift for me. I’m happy with it!”

On the game itself, Cornick talked about the fast start and the fans for their part in proceedings.

“We started the game so well, we had a few chances. We knew we were going to start the game well, the fans were tremendous again as always and they got us going. We will need them Friday in the play-off game, they got us going and we started really brightly.

“Probably should have scored but just before half-time is the perfect time to score so we could go into the changing rooms, re-group, make a new game plan almost for the second half to make sure we kept a clean-sheet because that’s our 19th clean-sheet which is unbelievable.

“We’ve had a few injuries, people with knocks playing through them. Sonny Bradley today was tremendous, playing through a knock and he’s our captain, he leads us and we know when he’s on the pitch, he’s going to put a performance in. We’ve had a few people out injured but they’re starting to come back now, so hopefully we can have a few back for Friday, which would be lovely.”

Briefly looking ahead to the play-off semi-final first leg next week, he said: “We needed to win today so we could go into the game on Friday full of confidence knowing you’ve got a great chance to win it. Friday is huge for us, we need to take a result over to Huddersfield.

“We know they are a good team, we’ve played them before, it’s going to be a tough game but if the fans here are going crazy like they were today, it’ll be a good atmosphere and a good game.”
