A convincing 4-0 win over West Ham United Under-21s saw the Hatters reach this stage of the competition, whilst Posh saw off fellow Sky Bet League One side Southend United.
Group stage draws followed by penalty shoot-out bonus point wins against Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s and Barnet, as well as a 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon, saw the Town finish top of Southern Group F, whilst Posh overcame Southampton Under-21s and Cambridge United in the group stages, whilst also drawing and then losing the penalty shoot-out against Northampton Town.
Tonight's game could also see the return of Jack Marriott to Kenilworth Road after his summer departure to the ABAX Stadium. Jack scored 28 times in 91 appearances in a Hatters shirt, but he could top that this season, having already netted 23 times in 36 outings for his new side – including two against Aston Villa in the Emirates FA Cup on Saturday to put Grant McCann's team into the fourth round.
THE GAFFER SAYS:
On Jack Marriott's departure: "He wouldn't have played as much as he wanted to here, or we think he wouldn't. All we can do is make decisions at the time, so there's no regrets. Why would I have regrets? We're at the top of the league. We are the highest scorers in England, although Man City might have nicked above us now after the other day. How many goalscorers can I keep happy?
"At the time, I couldn't guarantee him that he was going to start. We had Danny Hylton and James Collins, who are pretty much the top two scorers in the division from the last three years. Then I had Isaac Vassell, who had gone above Jack/ So when someone comes in and offers good money for your, at the time, fourth choice striker, you have to take it.
"That's not to say that I didn't try and persuade Jack to stay and be patient. But Jack said, 'I think I'm better off going'. He felt it was a good move for him and we did, because we let him go there and he's kicked on. He's done magnificently well, he's played and they've put an arm round him. The thing with us was, we couldn't guarantee him first team football."
On the team who will play against Posh: "We'll use the squad because some of the squad need games. But we will make sure we're right at it, energetic, so we're going to need to make some changes anyway.
"We're going to need to be strong because Peterborough are a very good side, they're in great form themselves. They've had a fantastic win on the weekend, they'll be strong, because in every Checkatrade Trophy game they've played they've been strong. They haven't changed from a Saturday, so it's another game for them. We will treat it with the respect we normally do."
WHO?
A Sky Bet League One outfit for the fifth consecutive season, Posh are looking to break back into the Championship, having been relegated from the second tier in 2013. Former Peterborough midfielder Grant McCann has been in charge at the ABAX Stadium since 2016, and with Jack Marriott leading his strike force and the League One goalscoring charts, they certainly look capable of going up.
