The 23-year-old admitted it was a ‘difficult decision’ to leave his boyhood club after 11 years but is excited to be at Kenilworth Road, along with fellow countrymen Nathan Jones, and players Rhys Norrington-Davies and Tom Lockyer.

“I know Lockyer and Rhys from the national team set-up so naturally that helps when you join a new group but I’ve only heard good things about the lads here and regardless of if I know anyone, I’m sure they will help me settle in as quickly as I can.”

He is familiar with playing at the Kenny and some fans may recall the goal he scored against the Hatters for Cheltenham, which Morrell admitted is "definitely the best goal I have scored!"

“I think it might have been the last goal I scored actually, three years ago. The takeaway from that day was just what a fantastic football club this is and the supporters that day are something I haven’t forgotten.

“Those things stick in your memory and I think we were very lucky to get a draw that day to be honest with you because Luton that year were fantastic, and they have obviously continued that upwards trajectory through the leagues in the last few years. I remember that goal, but I also remember the effect of the supporters at this football club can have on the players so that stuck in my memory.

The central-midfielder had more good words to say about the supporters too, adding: “It is what football is about, the supporters. It was a good opportunity to play at Wembley last week, hopefully not the first time that I will get the opportunity but hopefully the last time without supporters.

“Especially at a football club like Luton, the players really understand how much it means to the supporters and I think that is probably a big reason for the success of the football club in the past few years.”

Morrell hugely impressed on loan at Lincoln City last season and was awarded their Player of the Season after the League One season was cut short due to the impact of COVID-19. He is keen to continue playing regularly under Nathan Jones, saying: “At the end of the day, that’s my job. I couldn’t be that type of footballer who is happy not to play or play here and there.

“I want to be playing football and the best years of my career have been at Cheltenham and Lincoln where I’ve had the opportunity to go and play 30, 40 games. Albeit at a lesser level than the Championship but that is the next step for me.

“I have played in League Two, played in League One and at two fantastic football clubs. Last season especially in League One was a year I felt like I really improved and took my game to the next level, and that’s why I’m here to show what I can do hopefully. "

For those unfamiliar with Morrell’s style of play and ability on the pitch, the midfielder described himself as a player ‘who will give absolutely everything for the team and absolutely everything to win.’

“I’m not the biggest so I have to be as aggressive as I can be. My strength is always going to be with the ball but I feel like in the last few years, I have developed that side of my game without the ball and trying to win the ball back for my team as much as possible. I want to dictate the tempo of the game and someone who is keen to learn and that is a big part in why I have come to play under this manager.”
