“I think it’s important that we front up and apologise to the fans,” said the 27-year-old Wales international.
“It was supposed to be a great day out and it didn’t quite work out that way, so we’d like to apologise to them and send a massive thank you to those that stayed until the end. We really appreciate it, and to those who were singing, even when we were down.
“I think what we’ve created with the supporters this season has been fantastic, especially away from home, and we apologise and would like to invite as many of them to the open day on Tuesday so we can apologise to them in person.”
Town were trailing from the third minute, and Lockyer went on: “You don’t give yourself a platform when it happens like that. In an ideal world we get into half-time 0-0 and go from there, especially away from home. That was the plan.
“Obviously conceding both sides of the half kills any momentum, then we changed the shape, and I don’t think they caused too much threat for us in the second half. I had a great chance from the corner at 2-0 and I think he tugs me, and I think I score that if he doesn’t tug me. So that’s frustrating, and we concede the third after that and it’s an uphill battle.”
After wins over QPR and away at Norwich in the last week, the Hatters had to settle for six points from nine after losing the game the supporters least wanted to.
“That’s the annoying thing. I think if you’d said to the fans, what game do you want us to lose 4-0 in, this would be the last one. That’s why it’s so frustrating. The boys know that. The boys are massively disappointed.
“But if you take a look at the bigger picture, the results we’ve had against some of the teams we have, we’ve been on a fantastic run. This one’s obviously a dent in the armour, it hurts. But I think we’ve got to take that hurt moving forward now and if we can go on a another run like we’ve just been on, hopefully it will be all worth it.”
Looking ahead to the next week, with an open training session at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday and a home match against Sunderland next Saturday, the former Bristol Rovers and Charlton man added: “We’ve got an open day on Tuesday. Hopefully that will put it to bed with the fans and we can have a good week looking forward to next weekend.
“It’s going to be a tough week of training obviously, with the hurt from today, but it’s one of those things we have to do and if we can get another run going, that’ll be great.”
