After beating Wigan Athletic 2-1 with a remarkable late turnaround on Saturday, Town couldn’t find that same cutting edge at the Bet365 Stadium, despite Sheehan believing that there were chances that arose during the early stages.
“I thought we could have been a few goals up before they scored," said the Irishman. "They scored and then we were on top trying to see the game off before half-time, but then they scored again, so it was very disappointing.”
Sheehan continued: “Obviously the win the other day and the way it happened, it was like the feeling of last season in the game. We wanted to kick on from there, but we come away from a relegation battle game and they beat us, that’s all I can say about that.”
The defeat marks the third away game in succession that the Hatters have failed to score in, which the 33-year-old puts down to ruthlessness in-front of goal.
“Just ruthlessness I think is the word. When we are in there, we score a lot of goals. We have conceded a good few too though. Just the ruthless edge and unfortunately breakdowns in our third, they were ruthless and scored the first goal.”
The games continue to come thick and fast with Preston North End next up on Saturday as Sheehan claims the players have to ‘dust themselves down and go again’.
“We’ve been through too much together to start pointing fingers at each other”, the defender said. “It’s too easy to do that. I think that is a weak mentality, but we’ve had words.
“The manager spoke after the game and we have to react. There’s no hiding place, we are in the Championship which is a very tough league. We have to dust ourselves down and go again because nobody is going to feel sorry for you. We’ve got to stick together and separate the boys from the men.”
On a personal note, Sheehan – who started for the first time in the Championship this season – was far more concerned about the result rather than his personal achievement.
“The only thing that matters is the result and that is the really gutting thing from all of us, we don’t like losing and unfortunately we are losing more than we should be, and we’re losing more games than we are used to. We just have to stick together, it’s a long way to go, there will be ups and downs before the end of the season, but it was a disappointing night.”
