The club has just learned of the sad passing of Ray Smith, who played for the Town in the 1950s, at the age of 88.

Born in Evenwood, County Durham, Ray was turning out for Evenwood Town when he was spotted by the Town's north-east scout leading to a trial at Kenilworth Road.

The club liked the look of this tough tackling, rugged wing-half and offered him professional terms in February 1950, although he had to wait until October 1951 before making his League debut, in a 1-1 draw at Doncaster.

Strangely, Ray's second League appearance was against the same team at the same venue in the following season. Expected to claim a regular place at the start of 1953/54, he suffered a knee injury which delayed his progress and, although a mainstay in the reserve side, it was not until 1956/57, in the top flight, that he enjoyed a run of games.

Ray moved to Southend in August 1957 where he made 46 League appearances, and netting the one goal his middle name indicated he should, before winding down his career with Hastings.

After retiring from the game, Ray worked locally at Commer Cars and Renault.

Our condolences go out to all his family and friends.

*Ray's funeral will take place on Monday 24th July, at 2pm at the Vale Crematorium, with anybody wanting to pay their respects welcome to attend.
