Earlier this season we announced that the players charity of the year for 2017-18 was Families United Network, a charity based just minutes from Kenilworth Road in the Brittania Estates building on Leagrave Road.

The charty provide a number of vital services for children and young adults with a range of additional needs:

Clubs and Activities:

Families United Network (F.U.N.) provides clubs and activities for children and young adults with additional needs and disabilities, and their families.

You can find out more on the FUN website: http://familiesunitednetwork.org.uk/membership/

Disability Awareness Training:

Families United Network also offers Disability Awareness Training to schools, businesses and other groups who would like an insight into what it is like living with a disability; and how they can change to better meet the needs of disabled people within their organisation. All our training is delivered by parents of disabled children and young adults with first-hand experience of living and caring for someone with a disability.

Saturday Club:

Saturday Club runs fortnightly, and is for children and young people with a disability aged from 9 to 18 years.  The club helps each young person to try new experiences, build confidence and self-esteem, and to make and maintain friendships in an accepting and supportive environment.

Most of the young people that attend have a one to one support worker to assist and encourage them to participate.  As well as lots of onsite activities at our fully adapted Activity Centre, the young people have regular trips out into their local community, including bowling, swimming and adventure play.  The club also provides parents and siblings with a much needed break from their normal caring responsibilities, allowing them to have some time for themselves.

In his notes in the Cambridge programme, Hatters skipper Scott Cuthbert said "They are a fantastic charity who work with children in Luton who suffer with additional needs and disabilities. Your donations will go a long way to helping them support those families who need a place to go and experience leisure opportunities, social activities and groups that so many of us without disabled children take for granted.

"A few of us players were fortunate enough to meet some of the great kids they help and see first-hand the work the staff do at their base on Leagrave Road. It really was inspirational to see what goes on in the local community, so please give generously if you are able."
