The visitors took the lead through a Paddy Madden tap-in 18 minutes in, before James Collins levelled from the spot after Isaac Vassell had been upended by Murray Wallace. The win was sealed by a fine strike from Jack Stacey with nine minutes to go.
Jones said: “I am pleased with lots and lots of things. Our structure was very good, the way we moved the ball, the way we tried to develop play, I thought we were excellent.
“Scunthorpe were in the play-offs last season and they have strengthened and obviously they have aspirations of getting promoted this year, the same as us. So it was very, very pleasing. I thought we played very well, some good energy, good pace and I think we controlled most of the game if I am being honest.”
The manager hopes to see that sort of performance carry on into the new season, as he doesn’t want a repeat of last term’s play-off heartbreak.
“We were a hard luck story last year, in terms of should of, would of, could of, it didn’t happen. This year we’ve got to make sure that we are not. That’s why we have recruited for the next level.
“I am very, very pleased with how we went about our work today. We showed good intensity, good energy. We scored a wonderful second goal and it could have been one or two more.
“They could have had some from lapses of concentration, they didn’t carve us open, one long ball and just throwing the ball forward. We didn’t deal with it well enough, which we are going to come up against in League Two. But look, in terms of our play and our structure we were absolutely magnificent. Our play at times was breath-taking.”
