NATHAN JONES ON THE VICTORY OVER BOREHAM WOOD

Town boss Nathan Jones was "genuinely delighted" with his side's 2-0 victory over Vanarama National League side Boreham Wood this afternoon.

Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Olly Lee both got on the scoresheet as the Town made it four wins from four in pre-season so far.

Jones praised the quality of his players, the pitch and the opposition after the game, as he felt his side were progressing well with the start of the 2017/18 season just a fortnight away.

He said: "We passed well. We moved it. We came here last year and we lost, it was a big test but we feel we are ahead of where we were last year in terms of the squad and everything. I am very, very pleased. You can see there is no injuries which is a good thing. The way we played and the way we moved the ball, both sets of players were excellent.

"It wasn't typical [weather] for mid-July, but for football it was ideal. A real slick surface. Rain you don't mind playing in, when it's windy and the pitch is hard that doesn't make it conducive. But the pitch is outstanding here, we used it and moved the ball very well."

The game had a little bit more bite to it than recent friendlies, with a number of strong tackles put in throughout the game, but the Hatters manager said that's fairly normal the further into pre-season you get.

"I think that happens in pre-season when you build your games up," He explained. "Wednesday will be a different test for us, as will next Saturday. We have built them up, we played Bedford and then we went away and played a Slovenian side which gave us a different test from Bedford, the same with Hitchin.

"We know these are a decent side. They have probably got 11 different ex-pros out there playing – when I say ex-pros I don't mean journeymen or anything, they have got a very good side for the league they're in.

"We knew it would be a competitive game and it was. I thought we were genuinely excellent. I really did."
