Ilford born Mike joined Chelsea from school and became a part of the very productive youth system at Stamford Bridge in the 1950's. After making his League debut as a 16 year old he never really established himself in the Chelsea side though, despite being capped at England Under-23 level, and after 61 appearances in five years moved to Blackburn for £18,000 in 1962.
A big, strong powerful winger Mike blossomed at Ewood Park and formed part of an exciting forward line in a side that enjoyed top half finishes in the top flight for the first three years he was there.
Following relegation, Mike spent a season at Plymouth before becoming Luton manager Allan Brown's first signing following the Town's promotion from Division Four in 1968.
The £7,000 fee was soon repaid as Mike showed his top-flight pedigree as the Hatters took Division Three by storm in early 1968/69 with his penalty kicks being the best since the days of Gordon Turner. Sadly a succession of thigh injuries kept his appearances down and by the time he left Luton two years later to join Dover he had made 37 first team appearances, scoring ten goals, which was a great shame as on his day he was pretty much unstoppable.
Mike eventually settled in the West Country selling insurance and working for a medical company.
Our condolences go out to all his family and friends on their sad loss.
