MACCA ON A "SPECIAL DAY" AGAINST FOREST GREEN!

Alan McCormack was absolutely delighted to be a part of the promotion party and help the Hatters secure a 3-1 win over Forest Green Rovers last Saturday in front of a sell-out crowd at Kenilworth Road.

Having secured automatic promotion to League One last week away at Carlisle, the 34-year-old midfielder and the rest of the squad went in to this game looking to give the fans the celebrations that they deserve. McCormack said: “Before the game, we kind of knew that it was going to be a special day.”

Danny Hylton certainly set the tone in front of the 10,029 crowd as he bagged his 50th goal for the club after just 20 minutes.

Christian Doidge equalised for Rovers just after the break, but late goals from both Olly Lee and Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu made sure that the celebrations could really get going.

McCormack added: “Fair play to Forest Green, nothing to play for but they still came out and tried to do their things and tried to do it very well, so credit to them. But you can’t take anything away from the spirit that we’ve got.

“In my eyes we’re the best team in the league, we feel we are the best team in the league. We’re certainly ready for the step up, whether the other teams are or not is another thing. I can see big things happening next year.”

McCormack joined the Town at the beginning of June 2017 and made an immediate name for himself by scoring a 25-yard volley in his debut against Yeovil Town on the opening day of the 2017/18 season.

Despite his impressive start to the season, the Irishman picked up a groin injury in the win at Wycombe Wanderers in mid-September, which – combined with a series of subsequent niggles – ended up putting him out of action until March.

McCormack said: “It has been difficult at times, but I’ve not got too disheartened by it, because I knew it was only really short-term. But then it happened again, so then it was another setback.

“The manager wanted to see me go through a competitive game, you know, you can have in-house games all you like but it’s the competitive side of it. You don’t know which way players are going.”

Since his return, McCormack has displayed some of the incredible form that we saw early in the season, the Hatters haven’t lost a single game that he has been involved in since his comeback in March, with five wins and just the one draw.

The Irishman said: “I really have enjoyed it, the older you get I’ve noticed, probably the wiser you get. The gaffer is on at me all the time, not to be charging about the pitch, there are times when I’ve really got to hold myself back… I’ve managed my game a lot better and I’ve managed my body a lot better.

“Hopefully the fans see what we’re trying to do here, and see the potential in the squad, in the team and in the staff, and we will just get better and better.

“It makes you keep playing, you want to keep playing and that’s what I want to do so, I’d love to stay here, I want to stay here, but it’s out of my hands.

“I think if you walked in to any club in League Two and quite a lot in League One, they wouldn’t have the ambition that we have here.”
