A win over AFC Wimbledon and draws followed by penalty shoot-out victories over Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s and Barnet in the group stages saw the Hatters comfortably through to the next stage of the competition – with Gambin shining in the win over the Hammers.
The Malta international seized his opportunity to shine against West Ham U-21s. Lively throughout in a free role, he set up his side's first goal in their 4-0 win with a pinpoint cross, while his vision and passing ability set teammates free all night as the Hatters booked their spot in Round Three of the Checkatrade Trophy.
The Checkatrade Trophy Player of the Round shortlist for the third group stage matches is as follows:
· Nicky Ajose (Bury F.C)
· Luke Gambin (Luton Town)
· Reeco Hackett-Fairchild (Charlton Athletic)
