The Town's 20-goal leading scorer, who won six caps at Under-19 level and 12 for the Under-21s when a youngster coming through the ranks at Aston Villa, has been watched in recent games by the new Ireland manager Mick McCarthy and his coach Robbie Keane.
James, 28, is one of three new names in McCarthy's first provisional squad of his second spell in charge of the Irish national team, with the group set to be finalised on Sunday week before the players join up for training the following day, 18th March, to prepare for the game at Gibraltar's Victoria Stadium on Saturday 23rd March and at home to Georgia on Tuesday 26th March.
If he is in the final squad, James will miss the Hatters' home game against Doncaster.
