The 23-year-old picked up the man of the match award against Southend on Tuesday night and topped off a fine week with another goal, when his free-kick deflected past the Shrews’ keeper Joel Coleman for what proved to be the winner at Kenilworth Road.
The striker was pleased with his side’s second half display, especially having had to come from behind twice.
The team worked hard to break down a stern Shrewsbury side who were determined to sit back and defend their lead after a tough start their campaign.
Lee told iFollow Hatters (subscribers can click on the image above for the video): “It was a brilliant result and it’s been a great week with two wins and six points. I thought it was a very good second half performance and that’s what won us the game.
“We said at half-time that teams are coming here and showing us a lot of respect. They know how good we can be on the ball, they don’t come out of the blocks and we found that difficult. I don’t know if it was fatigue from Tuesday, but we didn’t really get going in the first half.
“So fair play to us, we came out in the second half, came out of the blocks and bar a freak goal, I didn’t see anyone else winning the game at 1-1, apart from us. We’ve shown great character to come back from 2-1 to win the game so it’s a great result for us.”
The forward was on joint free-kick duty with Jorge Grant on Saturday, and turned out to work brilliantly in Town’s favour as both players found the back of the net from similar positions.
Although Lee’s effort deflected off the Shrewsbury wall into the back of the net, it was all smiles from the ex-West Ham striker who was delighted, regardless of how it went in.
“It’s tough taking the responsibility of a free-kick when Granty has scored a great free-kick, and he took another one good after that,” said Lee. “We just took it in turns, whoever was feeling confident.
“I was feeling confident at the time and I think the gaffer owes me an apology actually...I heard he was saying I shouldn’t have taken it on the side! But no, it was on target, it took a deflection, but as a striker they all count and I’m really happy it’s gone in.
“You always want to make the keeper work and I was disappointed with my free-kick in the first half, so I knew I could make up for it in the second half. I know I’ve got the quality to take free-kicks, today was fortunate, it took a deflection. But in previous games we haven’t been getting the rub of the green, so I’m delighted to score today.”
Lee seems to really be enjoying his football with the Hatters at the moment and after a top week, he’s looking to emulate this success throughout the season in what is a step up in class since his previous campaign, when he scored 13 times.
“I’m really enjoying League One, I think it’s a big step up and a big challenge,” he said. “There is a lot more football being played. All due respect to League Two though, it’s a very tough league. It’s fighting every week.
“We did our best to play football in it but some games you get roped into the fight and you get roped into the long ball. I’m very happy we got out of it and now we’re in League One where there is a lot more football being played. I can drop off, I can run behind, I can link the play. I’m happy to do any job for the team.”
The attacker also praised the loyal Hatters fans in what was another fantastic atmosphere at Kenilworth Road, even though the team trailed twice in the match.
He added: “It was brilliant. The fans really help us every game, especially if we concede a goal like we did. We need them to really get behind us and really encourage us, so it’s brilliant from them, turning out in their numbers and making it a really intimidating place to come. When they get behind us, like they did today, I feel like there will only be one winner.”
