Last week the Hatters medical team scooped the League One Medical Performance award for the 2018/19 campaign at the Football Medical Association Awards.

Town physiotherapists Simon Parsell and Chris Phillips picked up the award on behalf of the department, who were vital in the on-field success the club achieved last season.

The divisional award 'represents the input of the medicine and performance team in the success of the Club', with Manchester City winning the Premier League award and Norwich City for the Championship.

Parsell said: “We’re delighted to receive the award – it shows how hard everyone has worked. All of the sports science, Darren Cook, the doctor, the chiropractor, the interns we have had in throughout the year – all of these people have contributed to us winning the award.

“It’s nice to have the recognition of your own body, it’s essentially the same as a PFA award for a player. It’s brilliant to get an award from the Football Medical Association.

“A lot of credit obviously has to go to the board for investing in the medical department and allowing us to have equipment to better ourselves.”

Having been nominated for the League Two award in recent seasons, the department stepped up again, with fantastic availability across the board for players.

The average match availability for the playing squad across the season was over 90 per cent, while in total, the squad covered a combined distance of over 19 million metres.

“We did well over the course of the season injury wise,” Simon continued. “Our availability for players has been good, when you consider the back five of James Shea, Jack Stacey, Matty Pearson, Sonny Bradley and James Justin all played 40 games plus.

“James Collins was available for the same amount, whilst Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu was available for every single game. So when the spine of the team is always available, you have done your job. You obviously see players pick up injuries over the course of the season, but I think we’ve been quite lucky really.”
