The 25-year-old didn’t shy away from the fact he has been a Chelsea fan for a number of years now – albeit admitting he was a bit of a ‘glory fan’ in the first place – but assured the media his sole focus is helping Town attempt to knock the Blues out of the cup competition.
“That is exactly what I want to do. I think first and foremost, you are playing for the team you play for and I don’t want Chelsea to win that game, no chance. Hopefully I can score the winner and knock them out the cup, that would be lovely!
On his Chelsea affiliation, Cornick added: “I think my first year was the year before Mourinho came in, so it was when Jesper Gronkjaer scored the goal to send them to the Champions League. I’m a bit of a glory fan to be honest, I started supporting them mainly when Mourinho was in there when it was Terry, Lampard, Drogba, Robben, those sort of players!"
And ahead of the game on a personal level, the former Bournemouth youngster doesn’t need any more incentive to put a good performance in for the team.
“I don’t think you need to psych yourself up. It is one of those games that you dream of as a kid, you’re playing against a team you support, and you are playing against the best players in the world.
“Growing up you always wanted to play against the players in that team, you want to play against Kante, you want to play against Werner, Thiago Silva too. You are playing against him and they are some of the best players in the world.”
But whilst recognising the quality manager Frank Lampard has at his disposal, Cornick insists that: “You have to go into every game believing you can win it and we have got enough in our squad to cause them a lot of problems.
“It is going to be a tough place to go to. It is a shame we can’t take our fans because it would be a great day out for them to go to Stamford Bridge.
"But we have to look forward to it and think there isn't going to be any fans there, both teams are under pressure, they need to get a result, so we have to take that into our hands and use it against them.”
