Town have been working hard in training as they hope to put defeats against Fulham and Birmingham City behind them, by winning back-to-back home games for the first time since February.

The manager recognised how impressive the victory was against Bristol City last time out at Kenilworth Road, a performance he hopes to see from his players on a regular basis.

“That was the definition of where we want to be, without a doubt. But everybody wants to keep a clean sheet and score three goals every week so obviously it’s not going to happen, but we’ve made real progress with that performance and that result. The key now is to try and repeat that on a consistent basis.”

Graeme Jones credited his players by saying how three games in seven days is ‘very intense’, adding: “It’s very demanding both mentally and physically but I’ve been pleased with the response this week.”

Of the players training, Brendan Galloway has been involved and the manager elaborated on how impressive the former Everton man has been.

“Brendan’s doing great. I’ve seen a real difference in the last seven days, a Brendan Galloway that I know. He’s had a period of training now with no setbacks, the pitches are a bit softer, so the patella doesn’t get battered as much, but it’s competition for places. Dan Potts has in my opinion been outstanding.

“He twice now, in the three games in seven days, has replicated huge distance and huge intensity consistently, as well as his technical awareness and his technical ability. If you look at him for the goal against Fulham, he was in the centre forward position so Dan’s doing really well.”

Competition for places is something Graeme has found all over the pitch, further revealing how Luke Berry, George Moncur and Elliott Lee have reacted to not being involved as much in recent weeks.

The Hatters boss said: “They have had a word, they’re disappointed and I think the good professionals do get disappointed, they don’t let things go. But I can only pick 18 and I can only pick 11, they know the reasons why and if they were sitting doing this press conference now, they would tell you I’ve been honest with them and sometimes it can be brutal being honest.

“They know the reasons they’re not playing but I rate all three players. I’ve got to get the balance of the team right, I’ve got to get the balance of the bench right and they were victims of that at times.

“I’ve got no complaints with those boys as professionals. I think the manager’s choice is one thing, he has to pick 11 and the 18 but how you are professionally, I said to the boys right at the beginning at the season, I’ll never ever put you outside my circle, you’ll do that and I can’t say that about the boys, professionally they have been superb.

“So whatever the next challenge is, whether it’s playing for the first team, being on the bench for the first team, whatever it is, if you are professional and work hard every day and are ready for whatever comes your way, sometimes a chance comes and you take it with both hands learning. They have all played Championship football this season, so they all know the level we’re at.”
