The Hatters could have increased their lead after Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu had been shown a straight red card in the 76th minute of the game at Kenilworth Road, and Hylton told iFollow Hatters after the game: “Last season hurt us a lot and we know what we want to achieve this year.
“We are not going to let anything, or any little excuses, derail us or take that away from us again. If we go behind in games, we’ll never give up, or if we go down to ten men, we’ll never give in.
“We keep fighting and we did that today and were comfortable, even though we went down to ten men – they had a lot of the ball, but didn’t really give them any chances, so yes, good character came through.”
The striker praised substitute Jordan Cook for the fine through ball that set him up for his first goal in five matches.
“It was a fantastic ball and Cookie’s got that, he’s a fantastic player,” said Hylton. “Every day we see it in training. He’s got quality. Technically he is so good, he works hard and he’s got everything.
“He’s been unlucky to not play as much as he wants to. Maybe he needs a little bit of confidence here and there, so hopefully that assist today will give him a little bit of a lift because he’s a great player and I thought when he came on, he did really well.”
With the Hatters now in the automatic promotion places after a third successive victory over the Spireites, the striker is aiming to repeat last season’s feat on tomorrow night’s trip to Morecambe – where he opened the scoring in a 2-0 win last November – by making it four in a row.
“That’s what we want, to start putting a long winning run together,” said Hylton. “We’ve not really put a good winning streak together – even last season when we came so close, but we didn’t win four games in a row all season.
“You look at teams that are up there now, like Exeter, that’s what they’re doing, so this is our chance and we want to do that.”
