After a difficult start to the season where Nathan Jones’ men won just two of their opening six games, Luton went on to win seven of their next nine, scoring twenty-one goals and conceding just four time in the process.
The Hatters started dangerously against their Hertfordshire opponents with new-signing Luke Berry opening the scoring just three minutes in. Fellow new-signing Jack Stacey charged down the right, crossing towards the former Cambridge man at the back post who rose above Ronnie Henry to head home.
The Town continued to dominate with Hylton capitalising from a Stevenage mistake to cut inside and finish from close range, with Berry adding his second halfway through the opening period with a first-time finish that rolled into the bottom left-hand corner after great work from Olly Lee.
Kenilworth Road was oozing with confidence as the Hatters continued to play the free-flowing football that had become the norm under manager Nathan Jones, but it was Stevenage who briefly hit back in first-half stoppage time through Ben Kennedy to reduce the deficit to two goals.
Any nerves about an unlikely Stevenage comeback were quickly dispelled seven minutes into the second half when James Collins was fouled in the penalty-box by former Hatter Luke Wilkinson, with Hylton sending the ‘keeper the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick to give Luton their fourth.
Berry sealed his hattrick in style on the hour mark after unleashing a fierce whipped effort that nestled in the top left corner of the net, before James Justin and Luke Gambin both finished well to take Luton’s tally to seven and give the Town their sixth win in seven games.
