Following Carlton Morris’ brace, the first goal of which he assisted, the creator turned provider in the best possible way as he picked out the top corner from 20 yards.
It put the cherry on the cake for what was a superb away performance, and back-to-back wins in the Sky Bet Championship to further move into play-off contention.
“I haven’t scored one of those in god knows how long,” Doughty joked. “I haven’t scored in a very long time to be fair!
“It was massive in the game. We were under pressure and as soon as it left my boot and it went in it was such a relief for all of the boys. 3-0, 10 minutes to go, we saw out the job really well.
“I know I can trust Carlton with my passes so I knew as long as I could give it to him, he could give it back to me and it was just down to me at the end of the day. It’s such a good goal so it’s a nice feeling.”
Doughty was also able to bank 90 minutes for a fourth consecutive match as he continues to impress for the Hatters since his summer arrival from Stoke City.
“I’ve had a rocky two years or so with football. This is my ninth appearance recently so I’m taking every game as it is and just showing this is what I can do, and this is my time really.”
Starting on the right-hand-side as a wing-back, the 23-year-old ended the match on the left, and he believes the versatility of not just himself but the whole squad is a key trait in this Luton team.
“Wherever we play, we know we can do a job. I know when we’re down on a few centre-halves and midfielders but as long as we work hard like you’ve seen today, everyone has put a shift in and you get results from it. It doesn’t have to be the prettiest game but as long as you work hard, that’s all you need.
“The gaffer has come in and we’ve all respected him straight away. He tells us he’s not going to intrude, he knows what we’re capable of and we’re just showing our belief in him. As you can see in these two games shows what it means to him and all the other players.”
